Unmasking the Myth: A Scientific Look at Fluoride
Saturday, April 25
9 - 10:30 AM
1.5 CDE Credits – DDS, DH, DA, AUX
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Fluoride has long been considered a cornerstone of preventive dentistry – endorsed by major organizations and ingrained in clinical protocols. But what if there is more to the story? This thought-provoking course invites dental professionals to examine fluoride through a new lens – one grounded in current research, historical context and biological health principles. We’ll explore emerging science around fluoride’s systemic effects, environmental concerns, ethical considerations and evolving views on its effectiveness. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of fluoride’s role in dentistry, while also learning about evidence-based alternatives for caries prevention and whole-body wellness. This is not an anti-fluoride presentation – it’s a pro-information, pro-science conversation designed to empower clinicians with knowledge, critical thinking tools and new options for care.
Course Objectives:
1. Understand the historical origins of fluoride use in public water supplies and dental products, including its roots in wartime industry and public health campaigns.
2. Identify potential biological and systemic effects of fluoride, including neurotoxicity, thyroid disruption, skeletal fluorosis and its links to reduced IQ in children.
3. Critically evaluate current scientific literature supporting and opposing fluoride use, including recent findings from the National Toxicology Program and NIH.
4. Assess ethical and environmental concerns related to mass medication, informed consent and fluoride’s widespread presence in food, air and consumer products.
5. Explore alternatives to fluoride for cavity prevention, including myofunctional therapy, saliva diagnostics, nutrient-based protocols and biofilm modulation.
6. Engage in respectful, evidence-informed conversations with patients and colleagues about the risks, benefits and controversies surrounding fluoride use.
