COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Looking good on the outside can be deceptive when living with chronic pain on the inside. Increased risk of periodontal diseases and dental caries are common hallmarks of many autoimmune conditions, fueled by chronic inflammation, a suppressed immune response and behavioral challenges. Consider how the Spoon Theory has become a motif for the autoimmune community and how it benefits dental professionals to identify the challenges of being a “Spoonie.” Explore risk factors contributing to autoimmune diseases, including diet, gender, genetics and environment. Identify strategies to reduce oral complications common in individuals living with autoimmune conditions.
Course Objectives:
1. Recognize how dental professionals can help improve the journey for autoimmune patients.
2. Identify oral considerations of living with an immune system that attacks itself.
