Understanding and Treating Frenulums: A Comprehensive Course from Infancy Through Adulthood

About the Course
This is a two-part course that will discuss and review oral frenulums and the impact they have on an individual from birth through school ages and into adulthood. A large portion of the course will discuss assessment of infants and toddlers and how to properly assess, diagnose and treat these individuals. The remaining time will cover how untreated oral frenulums can lead to problems into adulthood from both a dental and overall physical perspective. Select cases covering all age spectrums will be presented and discussed. The ulitization of both diode and carbon dioxide lasers will be reviewed as part of the treatment aspect of the course.
This session will enable participants to:
- Define the oral mechanics involved in effective nursing for a newborn
- Identify obstacles and common symptoms related to nursing for both the mother and infant
- Identify the signs and symptoms of frenulum related issues in a toddler and school-aged child
- Identify the signs and symptoms of a restricted lingual frenulum and the clinical manifestations in an adult patient
- Describe the tools and techniques used to safely and effectively perform a labial and/or lingual frenulectomy in a wide range of patient ages
Speaker
Paul A. Bahn, III D.M.D.
Dr. Paul A. Bahn is a graduate of the Temple University School of Dentistry (2006 Magna Cum Laude) and Temple University Hospital Episcopal Division (2008) with his pediatric dental certificate. He is the current program director for the Temple University Hospital Northeastern Campus Pediatric Dental Residency Program. The program is one of the largest pediatric dental residencies in the United States, consisting of 20 pediatric dental residents. He is currently appointed to the AAPD's Speakers Bureau and serves as an oral board examiner for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD). He is also board-certified by the ABPD and the American Board of Laser Surgery (ABLS).
