Stop The Microbial Madness
Friday, April 4
3:45 - 5:15 PM
1.5 CDE Credits – DDS, DH, DA, AUX
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Antibiotics, antifungals and antivirals are now routinely used in both human medicine and agriculture to control or prevent diseases. But the ecological balance is tipping. An increasing number of organisms, known as super bugs, are now antimicrobial resistant. The global impact of resistant infections has ramifications that are just now being recognized. Widespread, indiscriminate use of antibiotics has led many in the healthcare community to question the actual vs. perceived benefits of routine premedication and post-operative prescriptions. Antibiotic stewardship is the responsibility of all healthcare providers.
Course Objectives:
1. List the factors contributing to antibiotic resistance.
2. Evaluate why certain antibiotics are no longer recommended in dentistry.
3. Describe a dental professional’s role in antibiotic stewardship.
4. Detail the financial and life-altering impact of a C-Diff infection.
5. Discuss alternative approaches for disrupting oral pathogens.
